Why screen for Sleep Apnoea?
Although sleep apnoea is very common, most people have no idea that they suffer from this serious medical disorder. This is because the most obvious symptoms (snoring and choking or gasping for breath) occur when asleep.
Untreated sleep apnoea can cause issues like heart disease, diabetes, and memory problems. Screening helps identify people at risk of developing these (as well as other) health issues.
Early detection of sleep apnoea leads to timely treatment, improving sleep quality and lowering the chances of long-term health issues. With accurate screening and effective treatment, people with sleep apnoea can improve their overall health and quality of life.

What we look for...
To check for sleep apnoea, Dr Jess evaluates several important factors.
She starts by looking at your medical history and the presence of symptoms such as loud snoring, daytime sleepiness, and if a bed partner has observed you stop breathing during sleep.
Various anatomical factors such as neck size, enlarged tonsils, jaw and tongue size and the shape and size of your palate are closely examined as these can play a big part in causing airway obstruction.
Questionnaires, such as the Epworth Sleepiness Scale, are also used to assess how sleepiness is affecting daily life.
All our screening assessments are comfortable, non-invasive and can be carried out in clinic or online.

What happens next?
If you are found to be at risk of sleep apnoea, then often an At Home Sleep Apnoea Study is recommended.
Sleep Matters utilises an easy to use At Home Sleep Test that is done from the comfort of your own home. It is easy to use, affordable, non-invasive and an important step on your journey towards better sleep and better health.
The Sleep Study will be analysed by a specialist Sleep Physician who will confirm if you do have sleep apnoea, as well as determine it’s severity.
Knowing the severity of sleep apnoea allows selection of the most suitable type of treatment, as well as personalised care - resulting in better symptom control and an improved quality of life.
